Best Tips for Fall Family Clothes
Anyone else start the countdown to fall in the middle of July? If you know me, you know that I love all things fall. I’m talking pumpkin decorations, pumpkin spice lattes, basically pumpkin anything, sweater weather, crisp air after the summer heat...I could go on, but one thing I love most about fall is fall photo season. It’s so much fun to take family photos while the leaves are changing and we’re all getting ready for the holidays. If you’re taking family photos this year, here are my best tips for fall photo clothing. It’s my number one request every fall because clothes can be hard, but I hope this gives you direction moving forward.
1.Think cozy and cute when choosing outfits.
Fall can be pretty chilly here in the Pacific Northwest, so lean towards warmer clothing options for the whole family. If your photos are outside, make sure your kids are dressed warm enough so they are comfortable and can relax and have fun during your session.
2. Try to avoid “matchy-matchy” outfits.
When choosing clothes, I suggest no more than two people in the same color or print because photos generally look the best when there is a blend of two or three colors among everyone. These colors can be similar colors, just not exactly the same. For color options, I LOVE neutrals and pastels. Dusty browns and shades of mustard create a beautiful fall vibe as well! I try to avoid neon and bright/bold colors because they can create an unflattering color cast.
3. Layers are your friend!
Fall photo season is the time to layer sweaters over a cute shirt or dress and add scarves or other accessories to your look. Textures, like a scarf or knit cardigan, add depth and dimension and more character to your photos. Watch out for items that make you look and/or feel bulky or weighed down. You might not like how those appear in photos, so be strategic with the textures and clothes you pick.
4. Always choose the comfy shoes.
This is just general life advice but also for fall family photos it’s a must! Especially if you have a little one, make sure they are wearing comfy shoes that fit correctly so they don’t trip during your session.
5. Choose one style and stick with it.
It’s important for everyone to have the same style in the photos because it gives a more cohesive look. For example, if your style is dress casual make sure everyone fits the bill. You don’t want to have one person wearing super casual clothing while the rest of the family is wearing church attire.
6. I am here to help!
If you start suffering from analysis paralysis, reach out and I’m happy to talk things through. You are welcome to text me photos of your outfits or clothing ideas and I can give my opinion and make some suggestions if needed.
Don’t stress too much about finding “perfect” outfits for everyone, it comes down to finding clothes that make you feel comfortable and cute. Fall is going to be here before we know it and I can’t help but be excited already.
