10 Must-Have Photos from a Newborn Lifestyle Session
Whether it’s a handful of outfit changes or poses, newborn photography sessions can go a lot of different directions. It’s very easy to get distracted by all the options and trends, so I wanted to share my thoughts on the subject. As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I love these sessions because they capture a hectic time in a very candid and relaxed way. I love that it’s low pressure and easy for everyone. Second, there are a lot of possible photo outcomes but there are only a few mandatory must-have photos for me. If I snag these photos during your session, then I know you will be happy with the variety and will feel satisfied with your session.
1. Baby in crib or bassinet - This is a great baby-only moment. I love to capture them sleeping or laying down in their own environment. It’s cute and simple (you’ll quickly see a theme: Keep it simple!)
2. Nursery detail shots - You spent so much time and effort coming up with a nursery theme and decorating your baby’s room. I want to capture the room that you poured so much love into while you waited for the newest member of your family to come.
3. The whole family on the bed snuggling (yes, even the pets) - This is actually one of the best moments to include family pets in the photo because everyone can sit close and comfortably together. I love bed shots as well because they’re so warm and candid, it’s pretty hard to take a stiff photo while cuddling on a bed so this is a great place for everyone to loosen up and get cozy.
4. Baby detail shots - Simple is the best. I want to capture tiny hands and feet so you can look back and remember how tiny tiny tiny that sweet baby used to be. My approach to photographing newborn babies is natural + unposed.
5. Quiet and tender motherhood moments - I love getting some mom and baby shots because it really captures the strength and beauty of motherhood. I know that postpartum is exhausting and sometimes you’re not feeling your best, but these shots are priceless, once-in-a-lifetime shots and I won’t let you miss out on them.
6.Dad and baby photos - You need a photo of baby in dad’s hands just to show how itty bitty that baby is and of course you need to get some with baby and dad snuggling too.
7. Romantic moments - Hear me out about this one, your new life as parents is a continuation of your love story. I think it’s important to recognize that in lifestyle newborn sessions so I make a point to grab photos of parents getting close and snuggly.

9. Anything unique- If you have an heirloom blanket or your favorite sports team jersey, let’s get it in the photo! I love when we can add personalized touches to our sessions. Another example would be using a wedding photo on the wall to show the journey of your love story from “I do” to parenthood.
10. Simple smiling photos- It wouldn’t be a photography session without a few classic smiling at the camera photos. These are usually the ones that make people feel the most self conscious but even during a lifestyle photo shoot I think it’s important to grab a couple shots where everyone is happy and looking at the camera.
